Description
Substitutions are allowed and encouraged in certain cases, described below, but the recruitment of a sub from the sub pool and scheduling with the sub will be left up to the team members.
If, during the season, a player cannot commit to the rest of the league season for any reason (e.g. injury, unexpected travel), a permanent replacement will need to be found by the team, else the team will have to drop out of the league. Tournament directors can help with this as needed.
If you commit to playing in this league, please also commit to seeing it through! Having a team drop out mid-season is very rough for both the division and the tournament directors. We know that sometimes life happens, but if you could be so kind as to take this league season commitment seriously, that would be much appreciated. If we somehow find out that you are not taking the commitment seriously, you will be banned from signing up for our next quarterly tournament/league.
Rules
One match consists of best of 3 games to 11 points, win by 2. Scores are capped at 15, so if a team reaches 15, the game is won by that team, even if the score is 15-14. This is different from the spring season where each match meant you had to play 3 games regardless of who won the first two games. For this season, a team that wins the first two games will have won the match, and the third game does not need to be played.
At the end of the season, for larger divisions, the top 4 teams in a division will compete in play-offs, where the top seeded team will play a match (best of 3) against the fourth seeded team, and the second seeded team will play a match against the third seeded team. Winners from these matches will play each other in the gold medal match, and the second place teams from these matches will play each other for the bronze medal.
Tournament standings will be determined by (1) # of match wins, (2) head to head matchup, (3) average margin of victory/loss (cumulative margin of victory/total games played).
To start a match, follow standard conventions to determine who gets to call serve or side first. The winner gets their choice for the first game. You switch for game 2. For game 3, it would start the same as game 1, but teams switch sides when the first team reaches 6 points. Some suggestions:
Toss a coin and have someone on the other team call it.
Write a number “1” or “2” on something and have the other team call either “1” or “2”. If it matches, that team gets to choose first. (Can type on your phone’s note app and hand this over to someone else while the other team is calling it.)
Line calls are made by the team who is on the side that the ball lands on; if the two members of the team cannot agree on whether a ball was in/out, then the ball is considered in. If there is truly a disagreement over a line call, just re-do the point.
One timeout is allowed per team per game. Each timeout should last no longer than 1 minute.
