Swish utilizes the most universally accepted ranking criteria for the seeding of players/teams in
pickleball tournaments:
- Win/Loss Record
- Head-to-Head
- Point Differential
First and foremost, the win/loss record is used to determine player/team rank. Winning an
overall match is the most important criteria; this is a universally accepted metric for pickleball
tournaments (and sports at large).
In the event of a two-way tie for win/loss record, the Head-to-Head comparison is used.
Assume that Team A and Team B both have a 3-1 win/loss record, but Team B beat Team A
when they played. Team B is automatically ranked higher than Team A because they won the
Head-to-Head. Please note that Team A may (or may not) have a better point differential, but
this does not matter because Team B won the Head-to-Head.
Lastly, in the event of a 3- or 4-way tie, the point differential is used to rank teams. In this
scenario, assume Team A beats B, B beats C, and C beats A. Also assume that each team has
a 4-1 win/loss record. The teams are tied on win/loss, and there is no direct Head-to-Head (it’s
a 3-way tie). Point differential will now break the tie.
Common Questions
What if I had a bye and other teams didn’t have a bye? Am I disadvantaged because I had one
less game?
– No, our ranking algorithm will compare your win/loss percentage, not the total number of wins,
to determine rank. For example, assume there is a tournament with 9 teams, and 4 rounds of
pool play. Four of these teams will have a bye and thus only play 3 matches. If Team A is 4-0
and Team B is 3-0, Swish puts these teams on equal footing for having the same win
percentage, and now point differential will be used to break the tie. So, you are not
disadvantaged for having a bye.
How many teams advance to the playoffs?
– If there are 18 teams or less in your division, then the top 4 teams will advance to playoffs. If there are 34 or less teams in your division, then the top 8 teams will advance to the playoffs, and if there are 35 teams or more, then 16 teams will advance.
All pool play will consist of a minimum of 3 games. Not all teams will advance to the playoffs. For the International Tournament, Pool Play games will be to 15, win by 1. The playoff matches will be to 21, win by 2. You do not have to be serving to win the final winning point.
Each team is allowed a single 1-minute timeout per game. Taking more than 60 seconds during a timeout will result in a penalty.
In Pool Play, teams switch sides once the first team gets to 8 points. In the Playoffs, teams switch sides once the first team gets to 11 points. Switching sides is considered a free timeout for both teams.
Players will do rock-paper-scissors at the net at the beginning of the game to determine serve/receive, and side of net.
Coaches and spectators are not allowed to make line calls. Players should make the calls based on what they see. Spectators who try to argue over line calls and scoring may be removed from the site. Let these details stay between the players.
We will be using Rally Scoring. Rally scoring in pickleball awards a point on every rally, regardless of which team serves. If the serving team wins the rally, they continue to serve. If the receiving team wins the rally, they earn back the service for the next rally. In rally scoring, the serve alternates between teams after every point rather than only after a side-out, making each rally equally important.
You do NOT need to win on your serve. You only need to win by 2 points; you can win on a service or receiving point, as long as it is win by 2.
- Serve Rotation
Teams alternate serves after every rally, regardless of who wins the point. In doubles, partners alternate who serves each time their team serves, so both teammates take turns serving when their team wins back the serve. - Scoring the Point
If the serving team wins the rally, they earn a point and keep serving. If the receiving team wins the rally, they earn the point and now serve. - Service Position
The player on the right side always serves when the team’s score is even. The player on the left side serves when the team’s score is odd.
*Please note, in rally scoring, players stay on the same side (left or right) each point. The same teammate will serve on the right side when their team has an even number of points. The other partner will serve (from the left side) when their team has an odd number of points.
*Players on a team may decide to switch who is on the left and right side during a timeout. This means there are two opportunities to change: during a timeout for change of side, and during a timeout that your team calls (not the opponent’s timeout).
You can scan a QR code to view the scores, leaderboards, court assignments, and results for any division.
